Can I get disability benefits if I work part-time?

If you have a disability, you likely struggle to work full-time. You may get tired more easily or be unable to physically cope with strenuous work over a long period. If you are struggling financially because of the income you have lost as a result of acquiring a disability, you must have a good understanding of the benefits that you could be entitled to.

Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits are available for those who are not able to earn a meaningful income due to their disability. There are additional criteria that must be met to qualify.

You must have enough work credits

To qualify for SSD benefits, you must have enough work credits from past work history. If you do not have enough work credits, you may be able to claim disability benefits through Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, which are based on financial need.

There is a cap on how much you can earn

It is possible to gain SSD benefits, but if you are earning more than an average of $1,220 per month, you will likely not be eligible. If you are earning below this, you may experience more difficulty filing a claim than if you were not working at all. This is because the Social Security Administration (SSA) may believe that you are not disabled because you are able to work to some capacity.

Filing for disability benefits can be overwhelming and stressful. But persevering can be worthwhile. When successful, it can provide you with a significant income that can help you to live your life comfortably.
