Do I Qualify For Medicare?

Thousands of Californians apply for Medicare and Medi-Cal annually. At Ozurovich, Schwartz & Brown, our attorneys are Medicare resources for families in Torrance and Long Beach. So, we have heard and answered many questions about disability and medical programs. One of our most commonly asked questions is if someone is eligible for Medicare.

Your life is unique. Whether your specific circumstances make you eligible for benefits or not can change for many reasons. We can help you figure out if you are eligible for Medicare benefits. If you are not, we can help you find other options — including Medicare opt-ins.

Medicare Basics

In general, you probably qualify for Medicare if:

  1. You are at least 65 years old
  2. You are a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident who has lived in the U.S. for at least five years
  3. You or your spouse has worked long enough to qualify for Social Security, or you or your spouse is a government worker/retiree who paid Medicare payroll taxes

If you don’t qualify for benefits, you can still get coverage by paying premiums for Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and/or Medicare Part B (doctor visits).

Medi-Cal Benefits For Californians

Medi-Cal programs are meant to provide low-income California residents with health care resources. As a state-level Medicaid program, Medi-Cal may be available to you in addition to Medicare benefits. For an explanation about Medicaid law and you, ask a lawyer today about your options.
